Updated: November 30, 2025Getting your furnace ready before cold weather arrives prevents uncomfortable (and expensive) surprises. Here is your fall heating preparation guide.
Fall Furnace Checklist
1. Replace the Air Filter - Start heating season with a clean filter - Stock up on replacements - Set reminders for monthly checks
2. Test Your Furnace Before you need it for real: 1. Set thermostat to heat mode 2. Set temperature above current room temp 3. Wait for system to start 4. Verify warm air at vents 5. Let it run for 15-20 minutes
Note: A slight burning smell initially is normal (dust burning off). Strong or persistent odors are not.
3. Check Thermostat - Replace batteries if applicable - Verify programming is correct - Test that system responds properly
4. Inspect Visible Components - Look at furnace exterior for damage or corrosion - Check for any loose panels or parts - Ensure area around furnace is clear (3-foot minimum)
5. Check Vents and Registers - Open all registers (or most—closing too many causes problems) - Remove obstructions - Clean vent covers if dusty
6. Inspect Flue and Venting - Check that flue pipe is secure and undamaged - Ensure exterior vent is clear of debris - Look for bird nests or blockages
Professional Fall Maintenance
Schedule a professional tune-up including:
- Heat exchanger inspection (critical for safety)
- Combustion analysis
- Gas pressure check
- Electrical connections inspection
- Blower motor check
- Safety controls testing
When to schedule: September or October for Bay Area Tip: Book early to ensure preferred scheduling
Safety Checks
Carbon Monoxide Detectors - Test all detectors - Replace batteries - Replace detectors older than 5-7 years - Ensure detectors on each level and near bedrooms
Smoke Detectors - Test and replace batteries - Heating season increases fire risk
Gas Connections - Smell for gas around furnace - If you smell gas, leave and call gas company
Efficiency Preparations
Seal Drafts - Check weatherstripping on doors and windows - Seal gaps around pipes and wires entering home - Use door sweeps if needed
Attic Insulation - Check insulation levels - Add insulation if below recommended levels
Programmable Thermostat - Set heating schedule - Use setback temperatures when away/sleeping - Consider smart thermostat upgrade
Bay Area Winter Notes
Our winters are mild but damp:
- Humidity control matters as much as heat
- Systems may run more frequently than you expect
- Hill areas get colder than bayside
Even in mild years, having a reliable heating system provides comfort and peace of mind.
