Updated: December 19, 2025Refrigerant is essential for AC operation, but types have changed due to environmental regulations. Here is what you need to know.
What Is Refrigerant?
Refrigerant is the chemical that cycles through your AC system, absorbing and releasing heat to provide cooling.
R-22 (Freon)
Status - Production banned in US as of 2020 - No longer manufactured or imported - Only reclaimed/recycled available
Why Phased Out - Depletes ozone layer - Environmental regulations - International agreements
Impact on Homeowners - Existing R-22 systems can still operate - Repairs becoming expensive (scarce refrigerant) - Leaks are costly to repair - Consider replacement if major repair needed
R-410A (Puron)
Current Standard - Does not deplete ozone - More efficient than R-22 - Higher operating pressures - Used in most systems since mid-2000s
Characteristics - Cannot be used in R-22 systems - Requires compatible components - Generally reliable
Future Status - Will eventually be phased down - High global warming potential - Newer alternatives emerging
Newer Refrigerants
R-32 - Lower global warming potential - Used in some new equipment - More efficient than R-410A
R-454B - Next generation option - Very low global warming potential - Beginning to appear in new equipment
Practical Implications
If You Have R-22 System - Budget for eventual replacement - Expensive to repair leaks - May make sense to replace vs. repair
If Buying New Equipment - Will use R-410A or newer - Check for future-proof options - Consider refrigerant availability long-term
Refrigerant Leaks - System loses cooling capacity - Never normal to add refrigerant frequently - Leaks should be repaired, not just recharged
Bay Area Notes
Our moderate climate means:
- AC systems may last longer (less use)
- R-22 systems might still work well
- Replace based on repair costs vs. age
- Consider heat pump for new installations
